International Statistics
International information can help you compare the UK with diverse health systems in other countries. Data is available from organisations such as the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), Eurostat and the World Health Organisation.
These organisations require data input from the UK as a whole. We coordinate and aggregate UK-wide information on behalf of England, Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland. This includes data from a variety of sources including The NHS IC, Department of Health, Office of National Statistics and the devolved administrations.
Resources containing UK health information compiled by The NHS IC include:
OECD health database
A source of comparable statistics on health and health systems across OECD countries.
Health at a Glance 2009
The latest comparable data on the performance of health systems in OECD countries.
OECD Health Care Quality Indicators
The Health Care Quality Indicators project is focused on reporting the quality of medical care. The indicators measure health outcomes and health improvement attributable to medical care.
Eurostat routine data on health care
Eurostat provides the European Union with European level statistics that enable comparisons between countries and regions. Available health data includes cause of death, health care, health care expenditure, workforce and health status indicators.
WHO Hospital Morbidity database
Contains data on hospital discharge by detailed diagnosis, age and sex for countries in the WHO European Region. It can be used for the analysis and international comparison of morbidity and hospital activity patterns in countries.
WHO European Health for All database
A central database of independent, comparable and up-to-date basic health statistics. It contains time series from 1970 and contains about 600 indicators for the 53 Member States in the WHO European region.
European Community Health Indicator Monitoring
A project that aims to develop and implement health indicators and health monitoring in the EU and all EU Member States. The UK is participating in the collection, which began in September 2010.
The International Compendium of Health Indicators
A web-based application containing health indicators used by WHO-Europe, OECD and Eurostat in their collections. Provides easy entry to the indicator definitions used by the international organisations in their databases. This allows for a quick comparison between indicators and their definitions, in one coherent and structured system.
UK Health Statistics
This publication by the Office for National Statistics brings together up-to-date information on health and care for the UK and its constituent countries. It provides a ready reference for the comparison of key figures between the constituent countries, and between the UK as a whole and other nation states.
