National hip fracture database
Hip fracture is a common, serious and costly injury. Its care is the central challenge of the current epidemic of osteoporotic fractures.
Around 70,000 cases occur each year in the UK, with numbers forecast to double as the population ages.
This web page provides information about and links to the National HIP Fracture database.
The NHFD provides information about casemix, care and outcomes, and monitor the use of secondary prevention for hip fracture. Delivering good care for patients with hip fracture is challenging and involves many health professionals including nurses, surgeons, anaesthetists, care of elderly physicians, and rehabilitation staff.
The quality of that care varies considerably across the country. Hip fracture care can now be addressed by the combination of:
- Care standards derived from evidence-based clinical practice
- The national hip fracture database which monitors their implementation and the impact of that on hip fracture care and outcomes
The database serves to focus attention on this important injury, benchmark its care across the country; and promotes continuing improvement in hip fracture care in terms of both quality and cost effectiveness.
The audit is a joint initiative by The British Orthopaedic Association, The British Geriatric Society and the NHS Information Centre.
