Patient transport

"I think it will push patient transport up the agenda. The audit will be an excellent driver to improve services."
Alistair Chesser, Renal Consultant, Barts and The London NHS Trust

The patient transport audit was carried out by a patient survey and an organisation survey. Following a successful audit in 2008, a repeat survey took place in 2010.

What did it involve?

The patient survey asked paediatric and adult patients about their experience of travelling to their renal unit for treatment. This included travel by hospital provided transport or by private vehicle. For instance, we asked when patients can expect to be picked up, and whether they have to wait a long time. The organisation survey asked both renal units and commissioners of renal services about how they provide patient transport services.

This will help drive improvement in transport services for patients by:

  • reporting the variation in provision and performance of patient transport services
  • developing and communicating best practice guidelines

A 'Thank You' goes out to all the staff and patients who completed questionnaires and supported the patient transport survey - without their help and support the audit would not have been a success.

The results of the 2008 and 2010 surveys can be found on the Audit Reports page.

Unit Levels Reports from the 2010 survey can be found on our SharePoint site alongside additional reports from the 2008 survey.

The results are also available to authorised users on iView - the NHS Information Centre's online analysis tool.

Visiting their renal unit three times a week for dialysis means that the experience of travelling there can be of great importance to kidney patients.

Working in partnership

The patient transport audit is being delivered in partnership with a number of key organisations, including the Renal Association, the UK Renal Registry and the National Kidney Federation. The Implementation Group page has details of all the partners that we are working with.
