Datasets

A dataset is a sequenced list of individual data items. Each item has a clear label, definition and set of permissible codes and classifications against which sets of data can be compiled consistently and reliably.

A dataset for each clinical domain is a description of the data items, their definitions and the allowable entries that are collected when a patient undergoes an event or procedure.

An explanation of changes in the dataset is provided below.

Essential data items

The national bowel cancer audit project team have identified a list of essential data items. This contains the minimum number of data items, a total of 43 data items taken from the main National Bowel Cancer Audit Dataset, that need to be completed to make a valid contribution to the audit. All trusts are encouraged to submit complete data on these items to enable risk adjusted analysis of the data.
