What is MHMDS?
The Mental Health Minimum Data Set (MHMDS) is the only dataset that covers specialist mental health services provided in the community, as well hospital and outpatient care. It covers services for adults of working age and people over the age of 65.

Where does the MHMDS data come from?
The MHMDS is derived from routine records of patient care - details of admissions, attendances and appointments recorded in provider organisation's patient administration systems.

Where is MHMDS data for previous years?
Tables were published for 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 by the Department of Health which are now held on our website. Find out how to view the tables.

How many mental health providers supplied data?
The number of providers who supplied MHMDS data changes based on the year. A full list of providers who supplied data can be found in appendices of the MHMDS Bulletin.

Why is the data for MHMDS different to HES / KP90 which are both IC publications? Shouldn't data from one organisation be consistent?
The HES and KP90 publications are published using separate data submissions and the data within these publications all use different units of measurements to record information. Read more.

Does the independent sector provide MHMDS information?
From 1 April 2010 Independent and Third Sector Mental Health providers are required to collect the MHMDS. Read more.
