MHMDS data extract services
The NHS Information Centre publishes regular statistical releases from record level datasets, such as the Mental Health Minimum Datset. Most releases also include a low level aggregate data file in line with the Government's transparency agenda.

In addition, record level data extracts are available, subject to the appropriate Information Governance requirements being met.
Self Service Extracts
Providers and commissioner of adult specialist mental health services can retrieve processed MHMDS extracts covering their own services and the patients for whom they are responsbile from the Bureau Service Portal, free of charge. Full details of provider extracts and the way the data is processed can be found in the MHMDS User Guidance and Appendices.
Commissioner extracts are filtered by Org Code (Code of Commissioner) and commissioners will only be able to receive records where their NHS Organisation Code matches that supplied by the provider for the patient. Consortia groups will need to apply for a separate account for each commissioner for whom they wish to retrieve data, approved by the relevant commissioner's Caldicott Guardian.
Managed Service Extracts
Other users requiring record level data extracts can apply to the NHS Information Centre directly. Extracts are provided subject to the necessary Information Governance requirements being met and incur a charge.
The Managed Service provides a full year of record level pseudonomised MHMDS data extracts, starting from Q1 (April to June 2011/12). These can be supplied as either 'sensitive' or 'non sensitive' extracts and as national or sub-national data, as required (for example, extracts for specific commissioners, providers or GP practices).
Sensitive extracts include information about uses of the Mental Health Act including detentions and community treatment orders. Requests for sensitive data will require the approval of the Data Access Advisory Group.
The service can provide:
Final quarterly data - 4 extracts per year, produced from the most recent quarterly file for each provider (whether primary or refresh submission) after 'refresh' submissions have been processed
Provisional and final quarterly data - 8 extracts per year, 2 extracts per quarter - final data as above plus all providers provisional data after 'primary' submissions have been processed
Annual data - 1 file per year - the final view on the data and the source for annual statistics
Final and annual data include additional derivations and cleansed data items. Annual data resolves duplication of episodes spanning more than one quarter.
