Medical Research Information Service

The Medical Research Information Service provides health information to support medical researchers.

This service transferred to the NHS Information Centre on 1 April 2008 from the Office for National Statistics.

The service can identify and monitor study cohorts, report on the status of study members and provide long-term follow up for longitudinal studies.

Following this will make sure that you have the correct approvals; while our study supervisors will be able to help you every step of the way. Using The NHS IC's Medical Research Information Service will make it easier and quicker to get your study underway.

The application form: The key stage is filling out the application form. Our application process flowchart will guide you through this, and make sure you provide us with all the correct information and supporting documents that we need from you.

What approval do I need?

Ethical approval: Please note that we can only provide you with data if your study has ethical approval from the National Research Ethics Service (NRES).

Information approval: You will also need information approval from the National Information Governance Board for Health and Social Care (NIGB)

We can guide you through this process, so please contact us for help and advice. The application process page tells you what you will need to do.

The NHS Information Centre is committed to making sure that we will only provide information for medical studies if it adheres to strict ethical and security guidelines.
