What is the Indicator Portal?
The NHS IC's Indicator Portal is a website that brings a range of health indicators together in one place.
Why do we have the Indicator Portal?
There are currently a large number of health indicators available from a broad range of NHS IC online sources. The Indicator Portal was devised to provide access to a growing number of these collections in a format that is easy-to-use, convenient and comprehensive.
What are the benefits of the Indicator Portal?
The Indicator Portal provides quick and easy access to hundreds of indicators. It is a valuable information resource for all health and social care professionals, not just information specialists. The current set of indicator collections can help organisations to:
- Compare the demographic profile of their local area with other regions and national averages
- Understand what the population health challenges are in their area and how they may be changing over time
- Explore the diverse range of factors that influence health inequalities
- Build a picture of the current state of health inequalities in their area Inform annual health reviews and equity audits
- Provide measurements for service planning, performance management and other success criteria
What is in the Indicator Portal?
The following indicator collections are currently available in the NHS IC Indicator Portal:
Compendium of Population Health Indicators
A wide-ranging collection of over 300 indicators designed to provide a comprehensive overview of population health at a national, regional and local level. These indicators were previously available on the Clinical and Health Outcomes Knowledge Base website (also known as NCHOD).
Local Basket of Inequalities Indicators (LBOI)
This collection of 60 indicators helps organisations to measure health and other factors which influence health inequalities such as unemployment, poverty, crime and education. These indicators were previously available on the London Health Observatory website.
Summary Hospital-level Mortality Indicator (SHMI)
This new indicator sets the standard for reporting mortality at hospital level across the NHS.
Look out for announcements about the addition of further collections to the Indicator Portal in the future.
