National Renal Dataset
“Improving Kidney Care through Information”
The National Renal Dataset provides the specification of information to be collected by the NHS to support implementation of the National Service Framework for Renal Services. This information will be used by kidney care services to assess their achievement of the quality standards and to improve kidney care for patients
Status
The National Renal Dataset has been approved as a Full Operational Information Standard by the Information Standards Board for Health and Social Care. The dataset is mandated for collection by the Department of Health, sponsored by Dr Donal O'Donoghue, National Clinical Director for Kidney Care.
Changes to the dataset were approved by ISB in November 2010. The data items and the mandation dates are specified in NRD v2.2 which is available from the document download section of this web page. Additional guidance documents are also located there, including a conformance checklist. This is a tool for services and systems suppliers to use to assess their state of readiness for collection of the data.
The dataset extends the existing collections of the UK Renal Registry, UK Transplant and the British Association of Paediatric Nephrologists. Data collection and submission of the NRD will be included within these existing collection mechanisms.

An Information Standards Notice covering the changes will be published by ISB in due course; this will be available via the ISB website and will supercede the Dataset Change Notice 27/2008 has been published via the NHS Connecting for Health website, Dataset Change Notices 2008. The ROCR licence number for this collection is ROCR/OR/0192/FT6/001.
