This publication contains provisional council data on personal social services expenditure in England.
Final data will be published on 10 February 2009. As well as updating for any revisions made by councils since the provisional data was published, a further change will be made to consistently reflect the way capital charges were collected from councils.
Key Facts
- in 2007-08, gross current expenditure on Personal Social Services by Councils with Social Services Responsibilities in England was £21.1 billion, an increase of 5 per cent in cash terms (2 per cent in real terms) on 2006-07 and 7 per cent in real terms since 2004-05
- in 2007-08, gross current expenditure on adults' services was £15.6 billion, an increase of 1 per cent in real terms since 2006-07. Gross current expenditure on childrens' and families services was £5.5 billion in 2007-08, an increase of 5 per cent in real terms on 2006-07
- over the 10 years from 1997-98, gross current expenditure on Personal Social Services has increased by around two thirds in real terms
- in 2007-08, expenditure on day and domiciliary provision accounted for 43 per cent of total gross current expenditure, whilst residential provision accounted for 41per cent with the remaining 16 per cent being accounted for by assessment and care management.
