National Diabetes Inpatient Audit

Key Findings and Hospital Level Analysis from the 2011 National Diabetes Inpatient Audit is now available.

The 2011 National Report is due to be published in May 2012 which will include comparative data between the 2010 and 2011 audits.

The Hospital Level Analysis will also be updated in May with the 2010 data to allow hospitals to assess changes and improvements since the 2010 audit.

About the audit

The National Diabetes Inpatient Audit is a snapshot audit of diabetes inpatient care in England. The audit is set out to answer the following questions:

  • Did diabetes management minimise the risk of avoidable complications?
  • Did harm result from the inpatient stay?
  • Was patient experience of the inpatient stay favourable?
  • Has the quality of care and patient feedback changed since NaDIA 2010?

The National Diabetes Inpatient Audit (NaDIA) is commissioned by the Healthcare Quality Improvement Partnership (HQIP) and delivered by the NHS Information Centre, working with Diabetes UK and Diabetes Health Intelligence (YHPHO).

History of the audit

The NaDIA was previously funded and managed by NHS Diabetes and formed part of the suite of tools which operates under the sponsorship of the National Diabetes Information Service.

The first NaDIA in 2009 was run as a pilot and was used to raise the awareness of diabetes inpatient care and engaging the clinical community. Feedback from the pilot was utilised to improve the process for the 2010 audit which resulted in 93 per cent of eligible trusts in England participating.

How to participate

The audit takes place every year in autumn. Prior to the audit, the NHS Information Centre will contact each eligible acute hospital to provide further information on the audit and obtain participation details including the audit lead responsible for the distribution, collection and return of the questionnaires.

Once contact details are confirmed, participating units will receive audit packs containing the required numbers of bedside audit forms and patient experience questionnaires, a Hospital Characteristic form and supporting information and guidance.

In 2011 the audit took place between 3 and 7 October. The 2012 audit week is yet to be confirmed but information on next year's audit will be available early in 2012.

A national report detailing the main audit findings and a summary sheet for each participating unit will be produced. The 2011 results are available on the Diabetes Audit Reports pages.
