Supporting the Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention Programme

"The QIPP initiative is identifying how efficiencies can be driven and services redesigned to achieve the twin aims of improved quality and efficiency." Equity and Excellence: Liberating the NHS, Department of Health white paper, July 2010

What is the Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) Challenge?

The NHS remains as committed as ever to improving the quality of care that it provides to patients. However, the current economic situation has presented the NHS with a huge challenge which is to continue to improve the quality of services with a budget that is forecast to be held at a constant level for a number of years from 2011. In conjunction with this the purchasing power of the NHS budget is expected to fall by £15bn - £20bn due to the growing demand for care and above average inflation in the healthcare sector.

The quality, innovation, productivity and prevention challenge is our opportunity to prepare the NHS to defend and promote high quality care in a tighter economic climate.

What the Department of Health say

"Only by driving up quality and productivity together can we realise the £15-20bn savings needed by 2013/14 to reinvest in meeting increasing demand and patient expectations. That is why the Quality, Innovation, Productivity and Prevention (QIPP) challenge has been and will continue to be of central importance."

"Liberating the NHS: Managing the Transition" a letter to NHS Chief Executives from Sir David Nicholson, NHS Chief Executive, July 13 2010.

How we are supporting the QIPP programme

The NHS IC is working with the Department of Health (DH) and the NHS to consider how we can best support both the DH's QIPP programme with its 12 national work streams. As an organisation we have identified which of our existing programmes and information resources can be aligned with the QIPP programme as well as highlighting development opportunities to the DH and the NHS.

We have created a diagram to illustrate how our work aligns with the existing QIPP work streams and we will be updating this page regularly plan to provide further details about how each of these projects are being developed.
